Back to business

Kids are resilient. It seems when we travel with Maya that although she doesn’t fly well, she gets back to normal quite quickly.

She has really grown up in a lot of ways. Whereas before the trip I had to put her in a position to help and hope that she understood what I was asking, she now participates simply when I ask. For example, we washed dishes before, but I had to put her on the chair point at the dishes and hope she wouldn’t throw too many of the clean ones back in the dirty side of the sink, or on the ground. Now, she is anxious to climb up on the chair and help and becomes a little out of sorts when she is denied that right.

Parting with Grandma

Even though this trip to Moldova was difficult for Olya, I’m sure Maya will miss Grandma and all the attention she got. And I’m sure Grandma will miss giving that attention.

Refining software for group family history

»  mark    14 Oct 2005 @ 00:18

One of the things I’ve been able to do while Olya and Maya have been gone is some programming. Ah, just like the old days :) My latest project has been revising some software for posting and collaborating with family members on genealogy.

I found a nice piece of software at SourceForge with the wonderful GPL license which allows me to take it and modify it all I like to make it meet our needs. It has been a challenge because this software of course came with more functionality than you can shake a stick at. And that’s nice for geeks, but I want our family to work on this and they don’t have time to learn how to drive an aircraft carrier when a rowboat will do.

So I’ve been cleaning up the interface, cutting back anything that looks extraneous. Motivated by David Wiley’s famous statement that “too much function can crush the community,” we’re going to start simple and as people clamor for more functionality, I’ll add it back in. An afternoon at the Botanical Garden

My mom, Dima, Lena, Dasha, Maya and I went to the Botanical Garden in the afternoon and we ended up spending a few hours there, in spite of Dima’s ‘murmuring’ :)
