What are little boys made of?

This morning, while Olya was making the Yard Sale rounds with a friend, I got my first taste of being home with two kids. It was a handful, to be sure, but I decided that if I could keep Maya busy with Elijah, that maybe I would have a chance to clean up the house. When it came time to feed Elijah, I made my move.

I invited Maya over to the couch to feed the baby. She was thrilled and sat up on the couch nicely. Then I propped Elijah against a pillow and showed Maya how to hold the bottle. And she did really well. She held it patiently and I only had to check every couple minutes to make sure that she wasn’t letting the bottle lower too much.

When Olya got home, she was quite surprised to see Maya doing my job, but excited by the prospect. Since Maya was doing fine, we went into the kitchen to clean up. A few minutes later, we heard Maya’s voice from the other room. “Finished! Finished!”

The sickening thud that accompanied Elijah’s sudden cry a moment later made us realize that Maya hadn’t just tossed the bottle on the floor. Good thing kids Elijah’s age are very flexible. He quieted down after a few minutes and doesn’t seem to have any scratches, bumps, or even bruises. I think Maya will catch on fast.

He’s “2” as well… two weeks old that is :)

Elijah’s birth story

»  olya    10 Apr 2006 @ 16:57

As you already know, Elijah Dennis Nelson was born on April 3, 2006 @ 6:47 a.m., after only 3 hrs and 45 mins of labor (compared to 15 hrs with Maya)! Elijah’s birth was an amazing experience both for me and Mark and I still can’t say enough about how much I enjoyed it this time!

After having a really hard experience giving birth medication-free and recovering last time, Mark and I decided to try something new. We took a HypnoBirthing class after hearing a lot of positive stories from other parents. We enjoyed learning new things and changing our attitude towards giving birth and we could feel that this time things were going to be much better… and we were right!

When we arrived at the hospital, I was surprised to hear that I was already at 8.5 cm… I was having pretty strong surges (contractions) but they weren’t painful. With Mark’s help and support from our doula Claire, I was able to stay calm and relaxed throughout the entire labor and, just like we were promised in our HB classes, I didn’t feel any pain! I spent most of my labor in the tub, listening to relaxing music. Our little boy was born 1 hr and 45 mins after arriving at the hospital. I never experienced any pain, no matter how intense the labor was. Elijah let out a couple of cute little cries and then just laid peacefully on my chest, with his eyes wide open.

We’re also extremely happy with our decision to have a doula with us. Claire was a great support for both of us and a fun person to be around :) We are still amazed at how wonderful our birthing experience was this time!

Our new arrival
